Going Downhill, Quickly:
From humble beginnings in 1959, The Georgian Peaks Club has been dedicated to racing excellence, and, despite of its relatively small membership base, has achieved greater racing success than any other ski area in Eastern Canada. A total of ten Georgian Peaks members have made the National Alpine Ski Team at one time or another. This is more than the combined total of all the other clubs in the area. Karen Stemmle, Greg Grossmann, Todd Brooker, and Brian Stemmle are a few of the World Cup caliber skiers who at very young ages learned how to carve a turn on what are Ontario's longest and most challenging ski slopes.

The success of Georgian Peaks' racers is not simply the product of having the highest vertical and the longest trails in Ontario. The real story behind the ability to churn out a seemingly endless series of hot shot racers is a junior racing program that is the envy of all who have competed against it.

On any given winter weekend, The Peaks' superbly groomed hills are filled with class after eager class of "ankle biters" barely old enough to walk. They run slalom gates and practice their downhill techniques under the keen eyes of an elite coaching corps. At the same time, but on different slopes, it is not an uncommon sight to see teams of "adult racers", combating the elements on a giant slalom course in times that would amaze you. It would seem that dreams of making it on the white circus die-hard.

The Georgian Peaks' history and tradition as a "racing club" started at the very beginning when during the first full year in operation, in an effort to publicize the fledging ski club, The Peaks inaugurated the world's first truly challenging professional ski race: The Beehive Giant Slalom. With total prize money of $8,000, big bucks in 1960, it drew racers from all over the world, including many former Olympic winners. Since then the die has been cast and The Georgian Peaks' destiny as Canada's premier ski racing club assured.

The Club can all but guarantee great snow conditions because it boasts a highly sophisticated computerized snowmaking system that is capable of laying a thick blanket of snow over the entire ski area in a relatively short time. This and are arsenal of groomers that pack and groom the mountain to make it possible for any skier to look like a champion on some of the most challenging slopes in Ontario.
